THE STUDIUM GENERALE OF PÉCS, HUNGARY

Today, the concept of university is clear; referring to the highest level of higher education institutions, which, according to the relevant law, have internal autonomy. The original meaning of the word universitas, owever, was somewhat different from the one used today: it meant a community, a cohesive group similarly to Communitas. That's why it was used to nominate the European higher education institutions with independent governments emerging in the 12th century.
The University of Pécs was founded by Pope Urban V under an edict issued on 1st September 1367. According to the diploma, the operation of the university was approved by the Pope at the request of King Louis the Great of Hungary.
